Behaviour of ‘drunken’ commissioner to be probed

The Correctional Services Ministry is investigating reports of drunken behaviour by its national commissioner, spokesperson Manelisi Wolela said on Tuesday. Commissioner Vernon Petersen reportedly misbehaved at a dinner attended by Correctional Services Minister Ngconde Balfour and several of his African counterparts at Kievietskroon, outside Pretoria, on Thursday.

Schabir Shaik still in hospital

Fraud convict Schabir Shaik is still a patient at Durban’s Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital, KwaZulu-Natal’s health department said on Wednesday. Spokesperson Sibonela Msomi said that media reports stating Shaik was back in prison were incorrect. ”He is still being treated at hospital and we don’t know when he will be discharged,” said Msomi.

Shaik back in hospital for tests, says brother

Convicted businessman Schabir Shaik is undergoing tests at a Durban hospital to determine the extent of organ damage, if any, caused by persistent problems with high blood pressure, his brother said on Friday. Mo Shaik said: ”He is undergoing tests in terms of organ damage. It’s a case of seeing what there is and what to do about it.”

Yengeni arrested for drunken driving

The possible breach of the parole conditions of former African National Congress chief whip Tony Yengeni was under investigation after he was arrested for drunken driving, the Correctional Services Ministry said on Monday. Yengeni was arrested in Cape Town on Sunday evening on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol, police said.

Beuthin’s parole to be revoked

The parole of former bouncer Gary Beuthin is to be revoked following his re-arrest in connection with an assault case, the Department of Correctional Services said on Thursday. Correctional services spokesperson Manelisi Wolela said the department was in the process of revoking his parole conditions.

Union warns of chaos in prisons

The Public Servants’ Association of South Africa said on Wednesday that it foresaw chaos in the country’s prisons on weekends following failure of the Department of Correctional Services to compensate its employees who work on Saturdays and Sundays. Correctional services spokesperson Manelisi Wolela said the matter was still under discussion.
