Twenty rescued in Durban flash-floods

Search-and-rescue workers saved 20 people trapped in cars and homes by rising water in a heavy overnight downpour in Durban. ”We used a police boat to move many people away from the Island Hotel in Isipingo and we assisted several others who were stuck in cars due to rising flood water,” said Captain Troy Alison.

Overnight rains lead to flooding in Durban

At least 20 people who were trapped in cars and homes by rising water levels during a heavy overnight downpour in Durban were rescued by the police’s search-and-rescue team. ”We used a police boat to move many people away from the Island Hotel in Isipingo and we assisted several others,” the unit’s commander, Captain Troy Alison, said on Wednesday.

Protesters barricade Durban township

Scrap cars, fridges and burning tyres were used to barricade several Durban roads on Monday as about 500 residents demanded that a local ward councillor leave the area. The residents are demanding that an African National Congress (ANC) ward councillor leave his office and move out of the area as he had ”not kept his word on service delivery”.

Metro cops complain about speeding drivers

Johannesburg motorists had been using roads as a ”speeding track” since traffic law enforcement authorities in parts of Gauteng were barred from using speed cameras on some of the busiest roads in the city. The cameras were switched off until further notice, after traffic authorities failed to submit applications requesting permission from the National Prosecuting Authority.

Jo’burg metro cops go back to work

Newly appointed Johannesburg metro police officers who downed tools to protest against a lack of equipment went back to work on Tuesday, police said. ”Officers were told that if they did not go back to work then they would be charged, since they form part of an essential service,” said metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

Cape Town to challenge Eskom on load shedding

The City of Cape Town says it has asked for a top-level meeting with Eskom over power cuts and their threat to new investments. The request comes in the wake of an announcement by the utility that South Africa faces another five to seven years of electricity failures. Load shedding was to continue around the country on Thursday evening, Eskom said.

Stadium consortium interdicts striking workers

The Group Five-WBHO Consortium on Thursday obtained a Labour Court interdict preventing construction workers from entering the site where Durban’s Moses Mabhida 2010 Soccer World Cup Stadium is being built. The interdict followed an incident in the morning when two security guards were chased off the building site by striking workers.

Alleged robber hit by taxi

An alleged robber was run over by a taxi on Saturday while escaping a Durban crime scene. ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said the man sustained severe head injuries and was declared dead at the scene. It is alleged that the man had robbed a woman who had been walking with two men along Berea Road.
