An elderly woman was shot by robbers fleeing from a crime scene in Phoenix, Durban police said on Wednesday. Inspector Michael Read said five men, three of them armed, had entered the Smilesons shop in Phoenix on Tuesday evening and held staff members at gunpoint.

Students, police and security personnel clashed in running battles on the Durban University of Technology’s Steve Biko campus on Monday. Bricks, bottles and stones were thrown by the students. Journalists were chased from the administration block and a photographer was struck on the back by a student wielding a stick.

Paramedics have confirmed that four people were injured after a taxi turf war broke out involving taxi associations from around Durban on Tuesday. Police said some associations were attempting a takeover of a taxi rank. The incident happened just three hours before the unveiling of the province’s summer-holiday road-safety plan.

At least 14 Durban school pupils were injured on Wednesday when a tipper lorry crashed into a school in the Lindelani area, north of Durban, police said. Police spokesperson Inspector Michael Read said a truck ploughed into a high school, injuring pupils. ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said they had transported 14 school pupils to hospital.
