New Zealand school to ban birthday cakes

A New Zealand school is to ban children sharing birthday cake as the government introduces new guidelines to restrict unhealthy food being sold to pupils, a report said on Friday. Oteha Valley School in Auckland has told parents not to allow their children to bring birthday cakes to school for friends to share.

Education DG criticised in school-safety row

The director general in the Department of Education is in denial about a crisis in the school system, the South African Institute of Race Relations (SAIRR) said on Thursday. This comes after Duncan Hindle on Wednesday ”attacked” the SAIRR for its statements highlighting the fact that most South African children do not feel safe at school.

Cosatu backs students over fee increases

The ”crisis” caused by proposed fee hikes at two Johannesburg universities this month should be handled by the Ministry of Education, the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) said on Tuesday. ”We urge the Ministry of Education to intervene in the current negotiations at the University of Johannesburg and Wits,” Cosatu spokesperson Patrick Craven said.
