Four killed in Islamist attack on Somali governor

At least four people were killed on Thursday in south-western Somalia when Islamist insurgents raided a hotel where a governor was staying, a local elder said. The attack occurred in Qasahdere, 335km south-west of the capital, Mogadishu, where Bay region governor Abdufatah Mohamed Ibrahim and other government officials were lodged in a hotel.

Locusts infest north-east Kenyan district

Swarms of locusts have infested parts of north-eastern Kenya’s district of Mandera, ravaging pasture and crops in the arid area frequently hit by drought, officials said. Mandera district commissioner Naftali Mung’athia said the pests had destroyed crops on smallholder farms along the River Dauwa.
