A disabled 65-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the rape of a 10-year-old girl near Hazyview, Mpumalanga police said on Tuesday. Captain Leonard Hlathi said the man, whose legs were deformed and therefore had to walk with the aid of crutches, allegedly raped the girl in Nyongani Trust near Hazyview at about 3pm on Monday.
Thirteen reserve constables charged with corruption were set free after they appeared in the Komatipoort Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. This was because the prosecutor had misplaced the charge sheet, said Mpumalanga police spokesperson Leonard Hlathi. The 13 were arrested last Wednesday.
Racial tension within Mpumalanga police stations has reached ”ugly” proportions, says the province’s safety and security minister, Fish Mahlalela. ”The tension between black and white officers at police stations is ugly and dents … the fight against crime,” he told a meeting on Thursday.

Cases of murder, armed robbery and theft against seven men and a woman were on Friday postponed in the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court, Mpumalanga police said. The eight are accused of killing businessman Sihlangoma Solomon Hlongwane, whose tongue was tied with a string and pulled out until he died.

Illegal miners wielding AK-47 assault rifles have wounded two police constables underground at Barberton’s Sheba gold mine, Mpumalanga police said on Monday. Superintendent Abie Khoabane said the constables were among a group of 12 national intervention-unit officers sent underground on Thursday to find illegal miners working a closed shaft.

A 16-year-old girl was murdered by her family for staying overnight with her boyfriend, Mpumalanga police said on Thursday. Spokesperson Abi Khoabane said the girl from Mayflower in Ermelo spent the night with her boyfriend and when she returned home she was attacked by her brother, mother and father.

Two men who were found guilty of 21 charges against them — including seven counts of murder and six counts of rape — were sentenced to 445 years’ imprisonment each by the Middelburg High Court, Mpumalanga police said on Friday. The court found the men guilty on October 2 after a two-year trial.
