More gold for SA team at African champs

South African athletes continued to dominate the 16th African Athletics Championships on another windy day in Addis Ababa on Saturday. Three more gold medals by Chris Harmse, Hennie Kotze and Sunette Viljoen, in the hammer throw, 110m hurdles and javelin respectively, brought the team’s golden haul to nine.

Slim pickings for SA at Olympic Games

With just four months to go before the Beijing Olympics only eight South African track and field athletes have achieved qualifying times. Athletics South Africa says there is nothing to worry about. This is despite the fact that South Africa won no medals at the last two International Association of Athletics Federations world championships in Finland and Japan.

Five more SA athletes qualify for Games

Five athletes achieved the ”A” qualifying standard for the Beijing Olympic Games at Germiston on Friday night, and the men’s junior pole-vault record was also broken. Ter de Villiers won the men’s 400m hurdles in a qualifying time of 48,71 seconds, followed by Alwyn Myburgh (48,99) and Ockert Cilliers (49,18).

Mixed fortunes at Potch athletics meet

The second meeting of the Yellow Pages Ultimate Athletics series, held at the PUK McArthur Stadium in Potchefstroom, was an evening of mixed fortunes. The weather played a huge part as a fierce wind and dust storm caused several events to be cancelled while others were interrupted and completed later in the evening.
