An Indian man, frustrated at failing to find employment, ordered the murder of his father to get his government job, a day before the victim was to retire, police said on Tuesday. The man, arrested from a village in the impoverished eastern Bihar state, had planned to claim his father’s job on the grounds that he died while still at work, police officer Naresh Singh said.

Millions across South Asia are struggling to rebuild their homes, and their lives, as receding flood waters reveal the massive devastation caused by monsoon flooding in the region. In Bangladesh, where more than 750 people died due to the flooding, about six million became homeless after surging rivers broke through mud embankments.
The toll from floods across South Asia soared to nearly 1 900 on Tuesday as water levels in the region’s swollen rivers started to recede. Aid workers struggled to deliver supplies to some of the 28-million people displaced across India, Bangladesh and Nepal by the worst monsoon-triggered flooding in decades.
Police in India have charged a three-year-old boy for allegedly leading a group of rioters and firing at security personnel, the toddler’s uncle said on Thursday. The incident dates back to a clash in the eastern state of Bihar between villagers and police in January, when officers were pelted with stones and shot at, Dhruv Kumar Jha said.
At least 35 people were feared dead after a boat capsized in the Ganges river on the outskirts of Patna, the capital of India’s eastern state of Bihar, police said on Thursday. Authorities said the boat was carrying about 60 passengers, including farmers and children, when it sank.
Indian Railway Minister Laloo Prasad Yadav is beaming after a doll in his likeness has been snapped up from toy stores in the state of Bihar where he will soon contest elections. The plump doll, called Lalooji, sports a mop of white hair and is clothed in the politician’s trademark white kurta pajamyas.
