Oil prices hit fresh record highs on Wednesday, with New York crude at $94 per barrel after news that United States crude inventories had slumped last week, traders said. "The market is clearly reacting to the larger-than-expected drop in crude oil inventories," said Citigroup analyst Tim Evans. Over the course of Wednesday, prices rocketed by as much as $4 to $5.

Oil prices fell nearly 1% to below a barrel on Tuesday, fading from their latest record high as investors took profits from a rally driven by a Mexican supply failure and the spiralling dollar. United States crude fell by 71 cents to ,82 a barrel by 5.43am GMT after hitting a record high of ,80.

A storm killed 18 Mexican oil workers fleeing a battered offshore rig, and navy rescue teams were searching on Wednesday for seven people missing in the turbulent seas. State-owned oil monopoly Pemex said 61 people had been rescued after huge waves knocked the Usumacinta drilling platform into an adjacent rig.

Tens of thousands of people hunkered in storm shelters on Tuesday as Hurricane Felix roared toward Central America, but transport shortages left many facing the storm’s whipping winds and rain in their homes. The category-four hurricane, due to make landfall around mid-morning, charged toward Honduras and Nicaragua with top sustained winds of 215km/h.
