Study of science not ‘only for the rich and clever’

The impression that science is only for the rich, the clever or the select few should be dismantled, Minister of Education Naledi Pandor said on Monday. Speaking at the official launch of the Mondi Education Centre at Piet Retief, she said of the 748 000 grade 12 pupils now starting their matric exams, only 48 102 had enrolled for mathematics on higher grade.

Remains of MK cadres exhumed

The remains of two Umkhonto weSizwe (MK) cadres, believed to have been killed and buried in Piet Retief, Mpumalanga, in 1983, were exhumed on Monday. Months of research have led the National Prosecutions Authority to the conclusion that the exhumed graves belonged to Madoda Bonga and one other, as yet unidentified, cadre.
