Pollution at the Vaal River has reached crisis proportions, an environmental scientist said on Tuesday. Claudia Holgate described the sewerage spillage running into the Vaal River as ”a crisis” at a meeting of Save the Vaal Environment held at the Vaal River Barrage Reservoir.

The initial cause of the diarrhoea outbreak in Delmas was water contamination, said Mpumalanga Premier Thabang Makwetla on Thursday. ”When we noticed the outbreak in October, we discovered that the water was contaminated,” he said. However, Makwetla said that more cases were reported after the water was purified.

A total of 532 cases of diarrhoea have been recorded in Delmas, Mpumalanga, and there was still no clarity on the cause, the Water Affairs and Forestry Department said on Friday. On Thursday, 63 cases were reported, said spokesperson Linda Page.

Rand Water intends spending R4-billion on upgrading and refurbishing its distribution infrastructure in the next five years, the company announced in releasing its results on Thursday. Of this, 57% would be allocated to augmentation projects and the rest to the renovation and upgrading of existing infrastructure, said Rand Water acting chief executive Zvinaiye Manyere.
