Philippine rescuers were on Thursday frantically digging for more survivors after four people, including a toddler, were pulled alive from a building crushed by a landslide 11 days ago. More than 120 people trapped under the two-storey building near the north-eastern town of Real had been given up for dead days ago.

Relief agencies battled bad weather to deliver supplies to storm-ravaged areas of the Philippines on Monday as the toll of dead and missing from two storms in one week exceeded 1 400, officials said. Three towns were hit by flash floods, mud, rocks and thousands of fallen logs that cascaded down the mountains.

Philippine rescuers have recovered 753 bodies following this week’s storms in the northeast of the country, and 345 people are still missing, a military spokesman said Friday. The latest casualties were caused by Typhoon Nanmadol which passed through the northeast on Thursday. The civil defence office in Manila said the typhoon killed 35 people and left 13 others missing.

More than 900 people are confirmed dead or missing in the eastern Philippines after two tropical storms triggered floods and mudslides this week. The worst-affected towns on the east coast of the main island, Luzon, are cut off from help because of destroyed roads and bridges. Aid flights have been suspended due to a third typhoon expected to hit Luzon on Thursday.

A powerful typhoon is bearing down on the northeastern Philippines, where rescuers are battling to reach survivors from floods and landslides that have killed nearly 350 people. Typhoon Nanmadol is expected to slam into the main island of Luzon on Thursday, hitting the region where another 150 people remain missing since entire villages were washed away by Tropical Storm Winnie two days ago.
