China warned of a ”life and death” struggle with the Dalai Lama’s supporters today, as it sought to underscore its control of Tibet by claiming that over 100 rioters had surrendered to police. Officials had promised ”leniency” for anyone who handed themselves in before midnight on Monday, and warned that others would face harsh punishment.
More than one million people in eastern Ethiopia’s drought-hit Somali region face critical water shortages, the United Nations said on Wednesday. ”A joint multi-sectoral Drought Emergency Response Plan … has been released by the regional government. The plan indicates that more than one million people are currently facing critical water shortage,” the UN said.

Eight Turkish soldiers, kidnapped last month in an ambush by Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militants, were released in northern Iraq, a PKK official said on Sunday. The release of the soldiers came a day after the Iraqi government vowed to hunt down Kurdish guerrilla leaders responsible for cross-border raids into Turkey.
