Immelman edges Rose for Sun City win

South Africa’s Trevor Immelman won the 27th edition of the Nedbank Golf Challenge on Sunday, in spite of bogeying the final three holes at the Gary Player Country Club. He outplayed England’s Justin Rose, who blew up with a double-bogey six at the last, in what turned into a nervy two-horse race between the two players in the final round.

When the big cat’s away …

This weekend’s Nedbank Golf Challenge has already made the headlines, but it is likely to be remembered mostly for the late withdrawals by big-name stars. First it was world number three and two-time defending champion Jim Furyk withdrawing on ”doctor’s” orders. Then reluctant genius Sergio Garcia said he needed to rest for three months.

A whale of a time

I recently had the pleasure of spending a mid-week getaway at one of the Western Cape’s finest hotel/spa complexes. The Arabela Hotel and Spa, about an hour from Cape Town near Gansbaai, boasts fynbos-fringed fairways leading to a golf-course clubhouse with views of the Bot River lagoon and the Kogelberg mountains, writes Zodidi Mhlana.

Westwood wins British Masters

Lee Westwood produced a brilliant final round of 65 to win the British Masters and become only the seventh player to reach £10-million prize money on the European Tour. Westwood (34) was in dazzling form at the Belfry on Sunday as his seven under par round gave him a five-stroke victory over Ian Poulter.
