Siege of Ladysmith commemorated

Hundreds of international guests and media converged on KwaZulu-Natal on Friday at the start of the Ladysmith Siege Weekend to commemorate historic events that took place during the Anglo-Boer War. Organised by the Emnambithi/Ladysmith municipality, the event is in its fourth year and is expected to attract a crowd of about 5 000.

British police arrest ‘dead’ canoeist

British detectives said on Wednesday they had arrested a man who reappeared more than five years after he was presumed drowned in a canoeing accident. John Darwin was held on suspicion of fraud four days after he walked into a London police station and told officers he believed they might be looking for him.

Hurricane Noel churns north toward Canada

Hurricane Noel on Friday churned over the Atlantic Ocean on a northerly track to Canada after battering the Caribbean where it killed at least 122 people in the Dominican Republic and Haiti. It is expected to slam into Nova Scotia over the weekend still packing powerful winds, but no longer bearing the characteristics of a tropical cyclone.
