A prisoner serving 10 years for fraud wrote to a bank from his jail cell in South Africa’s North West province, requesting R10-million be transferred into an investment account he wished to open. He included a cheque dated 1995 from a company in his correspondence with a branch of a bank in Magopane.
Wage talks between Xstrata Chrome and the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa failed on Tuesday, as the strike at two processing plants near Rustenburg entered its third day. ”It is an extremely difficult situation and we feel the people losing the most are the workers,” said a company spokesperson.
At least six striking mine workers were injured when security guards shot tear-gas grenades at protesters outside the Xstrata chrome mine near Rustenburg. Security guards took action after about 250 protesters attacked the vehicle of a non-striking employee, said Etienne du Preez, manager of corporate affairs for the company.
Kaizer Chiefs closed the gap between them and table-topping Orlando Pirates when they beat Wits University 1-0 in a PSL game played at Olympia Park Stadium in Rustenburg on Tuesday. There was no score at half-time. Both teams started the game at a frenetic pace, but it was Chiefs who threatened the Wits goal.

Jomo Cosmos gained a valuable point when they drew 1-1 against title-chasing Moroka Swallows in a hard-fought Castle Premiership match at Rustenburg on Sunday. Struggling Cosmos were full value for their point and coach Jomo Sono was happy after successive defeats at the same venue against leaders Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.

Moroka Swallows are hoping to send struggling Jomo Cosmos deeper into the relegation quagmire at Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace in Phokeng near Rustenburg on Sunday. ”Cosmos are in serious trouble, we are going to tear them to pieces in their own backyard,” warned Swallows marketing and communications manager Sipho Xulu.

The classy Lekoelea scored two goals — one in each half from free-kicks.
A total of 1 700 miners at Impala Platinum in Rustenburg have been fired following an illegal strike, operations executive Paul Visser said on Friday. He said 1 700 rock drill operators at the Impala Platinum south section went on what he called ”a wildcat and illegal strike” on Wednesday.
News reports of African National Congress leader Thabo Mbeki’s jocular remarks in Rustenburg on Monday that he would ”beat” his sister if she supported the African Christian Democratic Party’s leader Kenneth Meshoe, among ”other silly parties” sparked a flurry of angry statements by opposition politicians and the ANC itself.
