About 142 court cases linked to xenophobic violence have been opened countrywide, the National Prosecuting Authority said on Tuesday. Spokesperson Tlali Tlali said 102 of these were in Gauteng. Provincial police liaison officers approached said none of the 142 cases had reached the conviction stage yet.
A South African Broadcasting Corporation promotional helicopter transporting cast and crew members from the local soapie 7de Laan crashed into a bakkie in Kroonstad on Saturday, Free State police said. Spokesperson Superintendent Sam Makhele said the helicopter was transporting cast and crew to a stadium for a show.
The University of the Free State (UFS) is expected to announce its decision on the future of its Reitz men’s hostel on Tuesday. The hostel was the centre of a racial storm in February this year after a video, made by residents, sparked a national outcry. The council of the UFS has mandated management to consider the possibility of closing down the hostel.

A police officer was killed and eight others seriously injured in a South African Air Force helicopter crash in the Free State on Wednesday, the military said. Seven other people suffered minor injuries. The Oryx helicopter was carrying 19 people when it crashed at about 11.40am near the Lesotho border.
