South Africa is moving backwards in key development areas such as economics and safety and security, says the Democratic Alliance (DA). ”When considering year-by-year positions on various indices, South Africa is actually backsliding rather than improving,” says a DA survey, launched by DA parliamentary leader Sandra Botha on Thursday.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says it hopes the inquiry into its suspended head, Vusi Pikoli, will be held ”expeditiously and fairly”. In a statement on Wednesday, it called on its staff to remain calm and to continue carrying out their duties in the wake of the suspension.

Parliamentary opposition parties were unmoved on Tuesday by the Presidency’s explanation of the suspension of National Director of Public Prosecutions Vusi Pikoli. Freedom Front Plus MP Willie Spies said: ”We have left [a meeting with the Presidency] with more questions than there were answers.”

Democratic Alliance (DA) MP Mike Waters has been suspended from Parliament following his outburst in the National Assembly on Wednesday. At the start of proceedings in the House on Thursday afternoon, speaker Baleka Mbete described his conduct of the day before as ”outrageous, disrespectful and grossly disorderly”.

The majority of the members of the opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) walked out of the National Assembly on Thursday after speaker Baleka Mbete officially suspended one of them for five days. Health spokesperson Mike Waters upset the speaker on Wednesday when he challenged her ruling that a question directed to Manto Tshabalala Msimang was out of order.
The African National Congress MPs who had pleaded guilty to Travelgate crimes should be dismissed, not demoted, says Democratic Alliance (DA) parliamentary leader Sandra Botha. ”They should not be allowed to remain in those positions of responsibility and trust at all,” she said on Friday.
