An Absa ATM situated inside a Newcastle pub was blown up, police said on Thursday. Captain Shooz Magudulela said the incident took place in Newcastle’s industrial area late on Wednesday night. ”A security guard was found tied up this morning [Thursday] and he had been like that since 9pm last night,” he said.
An elderly woman was shot by robbers fleeing from a crime scene in Phoenix, Durban police said on Wednesday. Inspector Michael Read said five men, three of them armed, had entered the Smilesons shop in Phoenix on Tuesday evening and held staff members at gunpoint.

A 20-year-old Newcastle woman has been arrested after she confessed to strangling her three-year old son in a bid to keep her new boyfriend, police said on Wednesday. Police spokesperson Captain Shooz Magudulela said the woman confessed to the murder of her son after being persuaded to do so by a friend.

The trial of three men accused of slaughtering a KwaZulu-Natal family is expected to start on Tuesday, police said. The Newcastle family of four, including a teenage girl and baby boy, were found stabbed to death in different rooms of their home in May 2006.
