Three days, three records. Alain Bernard set a world record in the 50m freestyle on Sunday after twice lowering the 100m freestyle mark in the previous two days at the European swimming championships. The muscular Frenchman swam 21,5 seconds to beat the time of 21,56 set last month by Eamon Sullivan of Australia.

South African star swimmer Roland Schoeman grabbed three gold medals and a silver to set the standard on the opening day of the Fina World Cup on Saturday. The Arizona-based Schoeman started off with a bang, winning the 100m freestyle in the season’s best time of 47,34 seconds and followed up with gold in the 50m breaststroke (27,45sec).

In a dramatic change to previous seasons, the Fina/Arena World Swimming Championships will be held over five weeks rather than several months, as was the case between 2003 and 2006. And, on a revised schedule, Durban will host the first leg of the seven events on October 19 and 20.
