Cape Town mayor and Democratic Alliance leader Helen Zille’s Sunday march against drugs almost landed her in trouble with the police again. Zille, who was leading a community march targeting at drug lords in Atlantis outside Cape Town, was denied permission to march in a street whose residents were said to be mostly drug lords.

SuperSport United held Kaizer Chiefs to a 0-0 draw in an entertaining Premier Soccer League game at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Sunday. Chiefs had the better chances and played with a swagger that had the hosts on the back foot for most of the game, but could not beat the superb Dennis Onyango in goal.

South African police traded gunfire with angry crowds on Sunday as they arrested 180 suspects in two operations in a crackdown on crime including murder and drug-trafficking, state-run media said. Police returned fire after they were shot at from a crowd of onlookers during an operation in which 25 people were arrested for public violence at Mankweng in Limpopo, it was reported.

A South African Communist Party (SACP) task team set up to investigate a controversial alleged donation by businessman Charles Modise has found no credible evidence that the donation ever existed, the party said on Sunday. The SACP said its political bureau took a ”dim view” of the conduct of Willie Madisha in the way he had handled the controversy.

Griquas made sure the Valke will complete their Absa Currie Cup rugby season without a win when they beat the East Randers 65-25 in Brakpan on Saturday. The winners were ahead 44-3 at half-time. Advertisers have asked that magazine publisher Media24 pay back the full amount for adverts placed in titles that were found to have inflated circulation figures, the Weekender reported on Saturday. Michelle Brook, media director at OMD Media Direction, is quoted in the report as saying that her company had requested ”full compensation” for adverts paid for in some titles.

Twins Danielle and Danika Lowton were doing well a week after the operation that separated them, the Arwyp Hospital said on Friday. Spokesperson Henry du Plooy said Dr Wale Adedipe, Arwyp Medical Centre’s resident neurosurgeon, reported that the twins were doing ”very well” after he visited them on Friday.
