The death toll from floods in Bangladesh rose to 65 on Friday as relief workers struggled to reach millions of people stranded in their villages without food or clean water, officials said. Twenty-three of the country’s 64 districts in the north, centre and east were at least partly submerged by the flooding caused by snow melt and heavy monsoon downpours.

International ratings agency Fitch reported on Thursday it had changed South African power utility Eskom’s outlook for its long-term local currency issuer default rating and national long-term rating to negative from stable. The price of New York crude soared to a record high point of $78,77 per barrel on Wednesday after the United States government said that American crude reserves had tumbled last week. The record smashed the previous all-time high of $78,40 set on July 13 2006.
