Statistics South Africa and the Star have settled a ”bitter battle” over an article which claimed that a multimillion-rand survey was bungled.
South Africa has experienced the highest rate of food-price inflation since January 2003, the National Agricultural Marketing Council said in its quarterly food price monitor on Thursday. From April 2007 to April 2008 the increase in the Consumer Food Price, as reported by Stats SA, was 15,7%.
Statistics South Africa should appear before the finance portfolio committee to explain alleged unreliability in the Producer Price Index (PPI), said the Democratic Alliance (DA) on Tuesday. ”Reliable official data is essential to policy-making,” said DA finance spokesperson Kobus Marais.
South Africa’s producer price index (PPI) rose by 11,8% year-on-year in March from 11,2% in February, Statistics South Africa data on Thursday showed. Dawie Roodt, economist at Efficient Group, commented: "I am afraid all these price increases from producers will start filtering to consumers."
Mining counters gave the JSE some extra momentum on Wednesday, pushing the bourse more than a percent higher by midday. At noon, the JSE’s broader all-share index was 1,29% in the black, driven by a 5,45% rally in the platinum-mining index. Resources advanced 2,47% and the gold-mining index rose 1,07%.
Transport was the area of highest growth in the South African economy between 2004 and 2006, a Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) survey has found. This was a result of accelerated purchases of motor vehicles, Stats SA said on Tuesday in releasing its Income and Expenditure Survey for 2005/2006.

South Africa’s economic growth has increased to 5,3% in the fourth quarter of 2007, up from a revised figure of 4,8% in the third quarter, Statistics South Africa said on Tuesday. South African retail sales fell by 0,5% year-on-year in December at constant prices, compared with a revised decline of 0,2% in November, Statistics South Africa said on Wednesday. Manufacturing slowed in December and mining output also fell, official data showed, fanning concern the economy’s two main power consumers will suffer from electricity constraints this year. At the same time, the Bureau for Economic Research warned that power shortages may trim the pace of economic growth to 3,4% this year.
The Statistics Council has not questioned the scientific basis of last year’s Community Survey, council head Howard Gabriels said on Tuesday. He said the fact that it had recommended that Stats South Africa issue a cautionary notice on the reliability of some of the data was standard scientific practice.
