Cameroon muscle their way into semis

Cameroon have muscled their way to the semifinals of the African Nations Cup, using raw physical power to knock opponents out of their stride. Tunisia, themselves not afraid to put themselves about, were almost literally pushed aside as Cameroon won Monday’s quarterfinal 3-2 after extra time.

Nigeria scrape through as Mali bow out

Nigeria scraped into the Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals on goal difference after beating Benin 2-0 on Tuesday to set up an appetising clash with hosts and arch-rivals Ghana. The Super Eagles pipped Mali, thumped 3-0 by Côte d’Ivoire in the other Group B game, after both finished level on four points.

Ghana, Guinea through to last eight

Hosts Ghana beat Morocco 2-0 to reach the Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals on Monday as the tournament claimed its first coaching victim with Henryk Kasperczak quitting Senegal. Guinea also went into the last eight, following Ghana through from Group A despite managing only a 1-1 draw against rank outsiders Namibia.

Parreira looks to the future

South Africa’s Africa Cup of Nations fate is out of their hands after Sunday’s crushing 3-1 loss to Tunisia, prompting coach Carlos Alberto Parreira to look to the future. South Africa came to Ghana intent on showing the world and their continental neighbours they could put up a stout showing when the World Cup comes to town in 2010.

Bafana thrashed by Tunisia

Veteran striker Francileudo dos Santos scored twice as Tunisia thrashed South Africa 3-1 on Sunday to go top of Group D in the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations. The Carthage Eagles have collected four points from two matches and lead on goals scored from Angola, who hit back in the second half to shock Senegal 3-1 in the first half of a double-header in Tamale.

No place for hero Van Heerden

There is unlikely to be a place in the starting line-up for South Africa hero Elrio van Heerden when they tackle Tunisia in the Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday. Van Heerden, who plays for Belgian club Bruges, came off the bench three days ago to score one of the best goals in the biennial tournament.
