University of Zululand students allegedly went on the rampage on Tuesday night, burning a lecture hall, police said on Wednesday.
The management of the University of Zululand (Unizulu) has been accused of poor management, racism and nepotism.
<a href="http://www.mg.co.za/specialreport.aspx?area=zuma_report"><img src="http://www.mg.co.za/ContentImages/243078/zuma.jpg" align=left border=0></a>Addressing the students and teachers at a University of Zululand graduation ceremony in Empangeni on Friday, African National Congress leader Jacob Zuma said that nation-building is not only about people’s attitudes. "We must understand that nation-building requires that we tackle the material differences between our people," he said.
It is ”distasteful” to tell students that toyi-toying does nothing to improve the country, the Young Communist League (YCL) said on Thursday. It rejected as unfortunate recent remarks to this effect by Education Minister Naledi Pandor. ”The YCL views these remarks as nonsensical and distasteful,” the league said in a statement.
Improved toyi-toying skills will not improve the country, Minister of Education Naledi Pandor told students at the University of Zululand on Tuesday. Speaking at a ceremony marking the official opening of three student residences, Pandor said: ”We haven’t come here to improve our toyi-toying skill. It doesn’t improve South Africa.”
Fraud convict Schabir Shaik is alleged to have spent in excess of R800 000 on Jacob Zuma’s children — footing an education bill of close to R500 000. Not only is he alleged to have paid the education fees of the African National Congress president’s children, but he and his companies allegedly forked out more than R200 000.

Two warring taxi organisations in the Empangeni area have been barred from operating following violent clashes over routes, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) provincial minister of transport Bheki Cele announced on Thursday. ”As from midnight on Friday, not even a single taxi from the rival associations will operate, failing which they will face the full might of the law,” Cele said.
