A Buddhist woman was shot and burned alive in Thailand’s violence-torn Muslim-majority south on Wednesday, prompting angry protests in front of visiting army chief Sonthi Boonyaratglin. Watcharaporn Boonmak (26) was ambushed by gunmen as she rode her motorcycle through a Muslim village in Yala.
Separatist Islamic militants in southern Thailand bombed more than 40 police and government targets on Thursday, killing at least two people and wounding 21. The attacks, using crudely made, small and remote-controlled devices, shattered the relative calm of recent days as mainly Buddhist Thailand united to celebrate King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 60-year reign.

Thailand on Tuesday vowed to pursue its offensive against Islamic militants as two bombs rocked provincial government buildings in the country’s south following a night of deadly gun attacks. Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra told reporters he is happy with the government response to the latest unrest and vowed further crackdowns.
