The government and the Big Business Working Group have agreed to set up a joint working team to consider ways of managing the impact of the strong rand, Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism Valli Moosa said on Thursday. The wildfires that chewed through southern California left a trail of dead, injured and displaced animals, but scientists say wildlife could eventually benefit from a rejuvenated forest. The fires burned in a typical mosaic pattern, leaving islands of vegetation that provided a refuge for the animals that did survive, biologists said.

Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa on Thursday tabled the province’s second annual HIV/Aids report in the region’s Legislature, saying: ”Care for people living with HIV/Aids places an extraordinary load on health care services. This is expected to peak around 2010, with maximum impact on acute care in hospitals.”

The estranged husband of Johannesburg socialite Hazel Crane, killed on Monday in an apparent assassination attempt, was not a mafia "don" but a lieutenant to Yossi Harari, said to be the head of Israel’s notorious Ramat Amidar gang. Police believe Harari visited South Africa and stayed with Crane’s husband, Shai Avissar, and his then lieutenant Lior Saat.

Trade union Solidarity on Thursday stated that it is to take arms manufacturer Denel to the arbitration court after certain divisions of Denel failed to comply with a wage agreement negotiated earlier this year.
