Members of the New Zealand cricket team have been warned their safety would be threatened if this month’s tour of Pakistan goes ahead, officials revealed on Wednesday, leading to four players refusing to go and putting a question mark over the series. Full details of the threat have not been revealed.

Swiss aviation authorities launched an investigation on Wednesday after radar screens monitoring flights in the area of Switzerland’s busiest airport went blank for 20 minutes. The air traffic controllers on duty responded quickly and immediately adopted emergency working procedures.

At least 16 Italians were killed in a bomb attack on an Italian base in Iraq on Wednesday, the country’s defence minister said. Hospital officials said seven Iraqi civilians also lost their lives. Italian intelligence services blamed supporters of deposed Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein for the attack.

Chris Hani-Baragwanath hospital is in a financial crisis because of a lack of a cost-allocation system and cost-monitoring measures, according to a National Labour and Economic Development Institute report released on Wednesday. ”There is high duplication of duties, wastage, corruption and theft at the hospital,” a researcher said.

The Palestinian legislature on Wednesday approved the new Cabinet of Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia, ending a two-month stalemate that has stymied talks on ending the fighting with Israel. The vote appeared to open the way for a resumption of peace talks with Israel.

Journalist Ranjeni Munusamy intends to appeal against a High Court order that she testify before the Hefer commission, she said on Wednesday. Earlier this week, Bloemfontein High Court Judge President JP Malherbe upheld a decision by former judge Joos Hefer that Munusamy must testify before his commission.

Guinea’s Supreme Court has disqualified almost all parties from contesting the upcoming presidential election, scheduled for December 21, after the groups failed to meet a deadline for paying $10 000 required to participate in the poll. Earlier, a a coalition of opposition parties announced it would be boycotting the vote.
