The Bloemfontein High Court on Tuesday dismissed with costs an application by journalist Ranjeni Munusamy to protect her from testifying before the Hefer commission. Judge president JP Malherbe found that Hefer’s ruling that she must testify before other witnesses are called did not violate her constitutional rights.

JSE looking soggy at noon

The JSE Securities Exchange South Africa was looking soggy at midday, with the continued strength in the rand and damp European equities weighing on the bourse. At noon the all-share index was 1,21% weaker, the all-share industrial index was 0,94% lower and the financial index slipped 0,44%.

Land Rights Bill ‘deeply flawed’

A wide range of organisations have gathered in Cape Town to ask Parliament not to pass the Communal Land Rights Bill, which they claim gives too much power to traditional leaders to the detriment of the rural poor. However, the groups differed on how to lobby government to accede to their demands.

US slaps bounty on Charles Taylor

The United States on Monday tried to tamp down controversy over a two-million-dollar bounty for former Liberian president Charles Taylor, suggesting the money might not be used as a reward for his capture. The State Department said it was discussing what to do with the money.
