Thai royal palace threatened by flood

Thai soldiers were scrambling on Tuesday to save a royal palace, an important historical landmark, from floodwaters that have submerged parts of southern and central Thailand, affecting more than 200 000 people and leaving one boy dead. Thailand’s royal household has helped in relief efforts.

The JSE Securities Exchange South Africa was trading in the black in noon trade on Tuesday, driven by positive corporate news and good performances by heavyweight dual-listed stocks offshore. Gains were seen across the board, with advancers outnumbering decliners on the all-share index by more than two to one.

Numsa threatens massive strike

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) on Tuesday said it would resist plans by steel group Iscor to axe 2 000 workers by December 1 as a result of the strong rand. Numsa spokesperson Dumisa Ntuli said the company would resume consultation with the union on Wednesday.
