Sri Lankan troops and police stepped up security on Monday following a spate of attacks blamed on the Tamil Tigers that killed 12 people over the weekend, a military official said. Troops in the island’s embattled northern and eastern regions as well as other parts of the island were asked to maintain a high state of alert, the official said.

Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao was expected to announce an order for Airbus airliners worth about seven billion dollars in Paris on Monday, a day after a deal that could see some Airbus aircraft built in China. According to sources close to the negotiations, the order entails China buying over 100 A320 aircraft, the mid-range, 150-seat workhorse of the Airbus fleet.

An Australian bank apologised on Monday to staff upset at being told how to trim nose hair and hide fat legs. The Commonwealth Bank’s ”Grooming Handbook” declared flesh-coloured knickers were in but shiny stockings were out. Rings were also acceptable, but no more than two per hand, it said.

Police in Zimbabwe have arrested a cricket official and two national team players over allegations of illegal foreign currency transactions amid a crisis in Zimbabwe cricket. The manager, Mohammed ”Babu” Meman, and the players, Vusi Sibanda and Waddington Mwayenga, were arrested on Saturday, said the state-controlled Herald.

The share price of Cape Town-based black economic empowerment group Sekunjalo Investments hit 80 cents in early trade on Monday, gaining eight cents and approaching a four-and-a-half year high of 82 cents. This follows the group’s announcement late on Thursday of a 303% rise in headline earnings per share to 4,76 cents for the year ended on August 31.

Five people were killed and dozens more wounded on Monday in a suicide bomb attack at a shopping mall close to the city of Tel Aviv, Israeli police and medical sources said. The blast, responsibility for which was claimed by Islamic Jihad, went off at around 11.30am at the entrance to the Hasharon shopping centre in the upmarket resort town of Netanya.
