Police in Zimbabwe have arrested a cricket official and two national team players over allegations of illegal foreign-currency transactions amid a crisis in Zimbabwe cricket, the state-controlled Herald reported on Monday.
The manager, Mohammed ”Babu” Meman, and the players, Vusi Sibanda and Waddington Mwayenga, were arrested on Saturday, the newspaper said.
It added that at least six more players were expected to be questioned this week over transactions in offshore foreign-currency accounts.
The crisis in the national team was thrust into the spotlight late last month when captain Tatenda Taibu resigned, citing threats from officials and a disagreement over his salary.
On Friday, he claimed that controversial Zimbabwe Cricket board chairperson Peter Chingoka and managing director Ozias Bvute were on the run to escape police raids. The pair have been accused of misappropriating funds.
But it later emerged the pair had not fled, the Herald said.
Chingoka and Bvute are due to see the police on Monday but they will speak on behalf of the board and not for themselves or about their personal transactions, the paper added. – Sapa-DPA
