In the world rankings on Monday, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh, Retief Goosen and Ernie Els maintained the status quo, while Tim Clark inched up one place to 14th and Rory Sabbatini settled in 23rd. Sabbatini surged into the top 20 from 71st early in the season.

Nadal fights for Monte Carlo Masters title

Rafael Nadal won’t give up his Monte Carlo Masters title without a fight. The 19-year-old Spaniard beat Arnaud Clement of France 6-4, 6-4 in the first round on Tuesday and said he wasn’t aggressive enough. ”The worst thing is to play too defensively,” Nadal said. ”I need to play with more intensity and be aggressive.”

Revised regulations aimed at making the processing of environmental impact assessment (EIA) applications ”quicker, simpler and better” were unveiled by Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism Marthinus van Schalkwyk on Wednesday. Among the features of the new regulations is the introduction of compulsory timeframes.

Struggle veteran dies in Soweto

Life-long champion of women’s rights Nnoseng Ellen Kate Kuzwayo died at the age of 92 in Soweto in the early hours of Wednesday after a long illness. Her son Bobo said Kuzwayo, who was until June 1999 South Africa’s longest-serving parliamentarian, died in the Lesedi private clinic at 2.30am.
