Trapped Mexican miners confirmed dead

Toxic gas levels inside a northern Mexican coal mine are too high for any of the 65 miners trapped inside by an explosion to have survived, the mining company said on Saturday. An analysis of underground air showed it was too poisonous to breathe, said Xavier Garcia, president of Industrial Minera Mexico.

Germany top Winter Olympics medal count

With one day left in the Winter Olympics and only two medal events set for Sunday, a few things are certain: Germany will leave Turin with the most gold medals, and Bode Miller will drive his motor home out of the Italian Alps with none. Dolphins, Cobras in low-scoring match

In a low-scoring match the KwaZulu-Natal Dolphins and the Cape Cobras had their respective campaigns curtailed by 32 overs on the third day of their Supersport Series four-day cricket match at Kingsmead on Saturday. At that stage the Cobras, with three wickets in hand, led the Dolphins by 197 runs.

Tall Niang emerges as hero against Leopards

Gangling, 2m-tall Senegalese striker Mame Niang emerged a gallant hero and a cynically constructed victim in Moroka Swallows’ needlessly tough 2-1 Premier Soccer League win over Black Leopards at Orlando Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Niang’s aerial ascendancy had the Limpopo club’s defence at sixes and sevens.

Arsenal lost 1-0 at Blackburn on Saturday to slip to sixth in the English Premier League and dent their chances of qualifying for next season’s Champions League. Also on Saturday, Chelsea beat Portsmouth 2-0 on Saturday to extend their lead at the top of the English Premier League to 15 points.
