Bafana Bafana: In brains we trust

South African football is likely to introduce a cricket-style selection committee to help with the choosing of players for the national team. This is one of the key recommendations in a report to be tabled when the South African Football Association national executive meets to map the way forward for the dysfunctional Bafana Bafana.

SA gran guilty of smuggling cocaine in gnomes

A South African grandmother caught carrying more than 3kg of cocaine hidden inside garden gnomes was found guilty of drug smuggling on Friday after a week-long trial in the Auckland High Court. Linda Martin (52) had denied the charge, claiming she had been framed by a Nigerian drug ring that put the four drug-filled gnomes into a suitcase she was carrying.

Khoza death proves Aids does not discriminate

Just a few days ago, one of South Africa’s most prominent soccer bosses, Irvin Khoza, chairperson of Orlando Pirates, buried his 30-year-old daughter Zodwa after losing her to HIV/Aids. The ”Iron Lady” was believed to have been infected by her husband and former Jomo Cosmos star Sizwe Motaung, who died in 2001, at 31.

Estate agents insist that foreign buying is not a factor in Cape Town’s property price spike — but circumstantial and anecdotal evidence tends to contradict them. The 10-person Panel of Experts on the Development of Policy on the Regulation of Ownership of Land in South Africa by Foreigners failed to find hard evidence that foreigners had driven up prices.
