JSE softer on profit-taking

The JSE was softer midday on Wednesday with dealers saying most stocks were overbought during Tuesday’s bull run. However, selective buying was giving the market underlying support. At 12.05pm, the all-share and industrial indices were down 0,63% and 0,08% respectively.

JSE still going strong after 119 years

Africa’s biggest stock market, the JSE, celebrated its 119th anniversary on Wednesday. The exchange was born in a humble miner’s tent in 1887, a mere year after the gold rush hit the Witwatersrand. It created an economic crucible in an infant Johannesburg and, in the 119 years since then, this has not changed.

Midterms: Americans vote for change

Ponting offers apology over victory antics

Australia cricket captain Ricky Ponting offered to apologise on Wednesday to any Indian officials who felt insulted by his team’s victory celebrations after the Champions Trophy final this week. Ponting, visibly impatient after the long presentation ceremony, gestured towards Pawar with his forefinger, asking him to quickly give away the trophy.

Ferguson: ‘No need for any mass sackings’

Kebble murder: Cops expect breakthrough

National Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi is hopeful that a breakthrough will be made in the near future in the murder case of businessman Brett Kebble, police said on Wednesday. ”The commissioner is hopeful of a breakthrough in the near future, he has asked the investigating team to report back to him in two weeks,” said Director Sally de Beer.
