Kebble murder: Cops expect breakthrough

National Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi is hopeful that a breakthrough will be made in the near future in the murder case of businessman Brett Kebble, police said on Wednesday.

”The commissioner is hopeful of a breakthrough in the near future, he has asked the investigating team to report back to him in two weeks,” said Director Sally de Beer.

This development follows a meeting between Selebi and the investigating team in which he was told that ”important information” was being followed.

The controversial businessman was shot and killed in Johannesburg in September last year. Since then there has been little indication that progress was being made in the case.

Meanwhile, the Mail & Guardian reported on the Scorpions investigation into the murder, called project ”Bad Guys”, outlining a criminal network surrounding Kebble, the network’s role in and after the murder and the police commissioner’s proximity to the network.

Kebble security adviser Clinton Nassif, arrested recently, appears to represent a breakthrough as Nassif features in each of the main strands of the investigation.

Police are also believed to be tracking foreign nationals hired by associates of Brett Kebble, radio 702 reported on Wednesday. – Sapa
