The head of Boeing’s 787 programme said on Monday the company is confident it can lighten the hot-selling plane by two-and-a-half tonnes — enough to fulfill promises that it will be much more fuel efficient than any similar commercial jet flying today.

GaRankuwa taxi boss Oupa ”Mzayoni” Moremi has been jailed for 18 years for murder, the Pretoria News reported on Tuesday. According to the newspaper’s website, the Mmabatho Circuit Court imposed sentences of 48 years each on Moremi and two of his drivers, Colleth and Clement Ledingwane for crimes including two murders and a kidnapping.

The Democratic Republic of Congo’s president maintained a sizable lead on Monday over the former rebel leader challenging his seat in a historic runoff election. The tally of about 1,8-million ballots out of 25-million registered voters had President Joseph Kabila well ahead with 70% of the vote, compared with 30% for Vice-President Jean-Pierre Bemba.

Iraq began on Monday to lift a curfew imposed to quell any insurgent backlash against the death sentence passed on Saddam Hussein, amid a wave of jubilation among his former victims and fury among diehard supporters. Italy and France urged Iraq not to execute Saddam and Prime Minister Tony Blair said Britain opposed the death penalty.

The Zimbabwe government is planning fresh home demolitions, a little over a year after a similar campaign to destroy informal settlements and backyard shacks left at least 700 000 people without shelter or a means of livelihood. Local Government Minister Ignatius Chombo has set up a task force comprising officials from his department and the police to lay out the groundwork for a new offensive.

Illustrations in picture books go beyond entertaining children and teach them how to navigate the world, according to a study published by the American Psychological Association on Sunday. Scientists tested 132 children younger than 30 months old to see if they could mimic actions depicted in picture books.
