Israeli assault kills four Gaza militants, woman

An Israeli air strike killed four Palestinian militants and gunfire killed a Gaza woman on Friday as Israel pressed its three-day assault, the largest operation in the Gaza Strip for several months. At least 21 Palestinians have been killed, more than half of them militants, since Israeli troops entered the northern Gaza town of Beit Hanoun on Wednesday.

Somali Muslims fan anti-Ethiopian sentiment

Thousands of angry Muslims marched through southern Somalia on Friday protesting alleged Ethiopian and United States aggression as fears rose of all-out war between powerful Islamists and the weak government. Amid tensions following the collapse of peace talks this week in Sudan, at least 3 000 demonstrators rallied for holy war in the town of Jilib.

High bank fees discourage saving

Fees charged on savings accounts discourage people from saving, who then make use of more credit, the National Credit Regulator said on Friday. Chief executive officer Gabriel Davel, testifying at the public hearings of the Competition Commission’s Banking Enquiry in Pretoria, said that with the exception of one financial institution, the returns on all entry level savings accounts were negative.

US spies create own wiki intelligence

United States officials say they have created their own version of the Wikipedia online encyclopedia for intelligence agents, in a bid to encourage US spy agencies to share information and transcend bureaucratic rivalries. Intellipedia allows analysts and officials from a range of agencies to add and edit content on intelligence topics in a collaborative manner through a classified internal web.

Joneses gather in Wales to set new world record

The saying ”Keeping up with the Joneses” could not have been more apt on Friday as hundreds of Joneses from around the globe headed to Cardiff to set a new world record. Joneses from as far afield as the United States and Australia have travelled to the Welsh capital to beat the current world record for a gathering of people with the same family name.

TV industry slow to react to internet

Google will make more advertising revenue in the United Kingdom this year than Channel 4, the publicly-owned broadcaster’s chief executive said on Wednesday. Andy Duncan said some broadcasters had been slow to recognise the challenge posed by the internet and multichannel TV, which cut into the audience and ad revenues of terrestrial broadcasters.
