Activists and academics are outraged by the ”farcical and offensive” way Parliament dealt with same-sex marriages this week. During submissions to the home affairs portfolio committee on the Civil Union Bill, members asked people who appeared before the committee questions such as ”What is gay?” and ”How do two men have sex with each other?”.

A leading land expert this week warned that expropriation should not be seen as the sole saviour of land reform in South Africa. Edward Lahiff says that, given the active condition of the land market in South Africa, there is no reason why the majority of land reform needs cannot be met through negotiated purchases.

If an asteroid is found to be on a collision course with Earth, it could be deflected, a scientist from the European Space Agency said at the Johannesburg Planetarium on Saturday. An asteroid called Apophis, which means ”the destroyer”, was detected in 2004 and was initially projected to collide with the Earth in 2029.
