Australia took a firm grip on the first Test after Stuart Clark and Brett Lee produced a sustained period of hostile and controlled pace bowling to bowl India out for 196 late on the second day on Thursday. Angola president sets date for elections

Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos said on Thursday that the oil-rich African nation would hold its delayed parliamentary elections on September 5 and 6 next year, the state-run Angop news agency reported. An estimated eight million Angolans are expected to vote in the election. The country has not held a national poll since a disastrous 1992 presidential race.

Comedian Barry Hilton appears in court

Well-known comedian Barry Hilton appeared in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court on charges of robbery and crimen injuria on Thursday, state prosecutor Advocate Tania Zwiegelaar said. Hilton was arrested on Monday by Walmer police following a complaint by the owner of an arts and craft shop.

Uganda says Ebola outbreak receding

Isolation wards for Ebola patients in western Uganda are now empty, a senior health official said on Thursday, voicing hope that the killer fever was finally receding. Sam Okware, who heads the national task force on the outbreak, said a patient admitted on December 22 was the only one in the Bundibugyo hospital’s isolation wards.

More than 130 feared dead in Indonesia

Indonesian rescuers on Thursday hunted for victims of landslides and floods on Java Island that have left more than 130 people feared dead and tens of thousands displaced, officials said. Landslides hit two districts in Central Java in the early hours of Wednesday morning, engulfing entire homes and blocking roads.

No change in petrol price

The retail price of all grades of petrol will remain unchanged on Wednesday January 2 from a previous increase of 43 cents a litre, the Department of Minerals and Energy announced on Thursday. The retail price of a litre of 95 octane unleaded petrol in Gauteng remains at R7,47, and R7,23 at the coast — new highs set in December.

Over 200 arrested in inner city

About 234 people have been arrested over a 48-hour period in the inner city, Johannesburg police said on Thursday. ”All these people were arrested in Hillbrow, Berea and Joubert Park as part of our accelerated crime combat operations, to maintain a safe environment as we are preparing for the new year celebrations,” said police spokesperson Captain Bhekizizwe Mavundla.

Prosecutors hold off on Zuma, Selebi

South African prosecutors are likely to wait at least two weeks before deciding whether to file charges against the new African National Congress president and the country’s police chief, a newspaper said on Thursday. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) recently said it had enough evidence to re-charge ANC president Jacob Zuma.
