The government will give a million bicycles to school children throughout the country by 2015 to promote non-motorised transport (NMT), Transport Minister Jeff Radebe said on Thursday. There is a need to provide safe, affordable and reliable transport to pupils in rural and urban areas, Radebe told an international conference on NMT in Midrand on Thursday.

The internet is making a transition from flat websites offering static information to a new computing platform independent of earlier shackles. These "Web 2.0" applications available include web-based word processors and spreadsheets, online calendars, and back-up services such as that provided by Mozy.

Creating two separate time zones in the country could lead to a massive annual saving of about 500MW of electricity generation, says an internal Eskom study. Eskom’s figures show that it currently costs R10-million per megawatt to build new power capacity, suggesting that energy savings from more efficient use of time zones could obviate the need for R5-billion in new capacity.

The manne were denouncing hypocrites left and right this week when they heard that plans are afoot to build a R90-million wall around the president’s Pretoria residence, but Lemmer supports Mr Mbeki entirely. After all, the man has refused to indulge in empty theaÂtrical gestures in the fight against crime, and a plain, utilitarian wall is as un-theatrical as it gets.

Grace Kafere is tired. She has been on her feet for close to five hours, bending over as she moves up and down in a forest gathering twigs and branches to sell as firewood. The 45-year-old single mother of five lost her job as an administrative assistant three years ago when the firm where she was working was restructured. She has been unable to secure another job since then.

The United States is planning what will be a catastrophic attack on Iran. For the Bush cabal, the attack will be a way of ”buying time” for its disaster in Iraq. In announcing what he called a ”surge” of American troops in Iraq, George W Bush identified Iran as his real target. ”We will interrupt the flow of support [to the insurgency in Iraq] from Iran and Syria,” he said.

European football’s governing body, Uefa, confirmed on Wednesday that they have officially opened an investigation into incidents that marred the Champions League last 16, first-leg match between Manchester United and Lille in Lens. Tear gas was used during the match, which United won 1-0 at the Stade Felix-Bollaert on Tuesday night.

Disaster officials and aid agencies are closely monitoring Tropical Cyclone Favio, due to make landfall in flood-drenched Mozambique on Thursday, as it crosses the narrow sea channel from Madagascar. By 6pm local time on Wednesday afternoon, Favio was a very intense category-three storm with winds of about 185km/h.

At least 38 Rwandan militiamen and five democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) soldiers have been killed in clashes this week as DRC’s government strives to impose its authority on the country’s war-torn east, a United Nations official said on Wednesday.
