CPIX seen in line with expectations

The increase in South Africa’s consumer price index excluding mortgage rate changes (CPIX) for metro and other areas, which is used by the South African Reserve Bank for its inflation target, was up 5,3% year-on-year in January from 5% in December, Statistics South Africa said on Wednesday.

Lesotho’s ruling party wins parliamentary election

Lesotho’s ruling party has won parliamentary elections after facing a tough challenge from a new opposition group in the tiny Southern African kingdom, plagued by one of the world’s worst HIV/Aids crises. The Lesotho Congress for Democracy took 61 constituencies out of a total 80, while the main opposition All Basotho Convention gained 17.

Real Madrid, Man United win in Champions League

Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Lille on Tuesday in the Champions League was marred by crowd incidents and a contentious goal. Real Madrid, however, helped ease the pressure on its coach by beating Bayern Munich 3-2. Also, PSV Eindhoven beat Arsenal 1-0 and Celtic held AC Milan to a 0-0 in the other first leg matches of the second round.

Aussies insist Cup defence on track

Australia’s battered and beaten one-day cricket side limped home on Wednesday insisting their World Cup defence was on track despite an unprecedented 3-0 series pasting from the Black Caps in New Zealand. Australia’s winless New Zealand campaign, dubbed a ”blackwash” by the media, followed two losses to England in the domestic tri-series final.

Italian organ donor was HIV-positive

Three patients at a hospital in Florence were given transplants using organs from a donor who was HIV-positive because of a mistake made on a laboratory form, Italian health officials said on Tuesday. ”Human error” had led to the liver and both kidneys of a 41-year-old woman being cleared for transplantation.

Woolworths says pet food may be contaminated

Woolworths has withdrawn all its house brand dry dog and cat food from its shelves over concerns that it may be contaminated, the South African Broadcasting Corporation said on Tuesday. The company said it was alerted by a supplier that there might be traces of a contaminant, ethylene-glycol, in its range of pet food.

Mugabe slams ‘corrupt’ ministers

Zimbabwe’s veteran leader Robert Mugabe reiterated on Tuesday there was no vacancy for the country’s presidency, warning ambitious government colleagues to stop jostling to succeed him. In a defiant interview marking his 83rd birthday, Mugabe also lashed out at ”corrupt” ministers in his Cabinet.
