Thousands of Brazilian dancers, singers and musicians kicked the annual Carnival bash into high gear on Sunday with a spectacle of floats, costumes and Latin beats. Three Croatians have become the latest foreigners to be kidnapped at gunpoint in Nigeria’s oil capital of Port Harcourt, industry sources said on Monday. Gunmen abducted the three late on Sunday, reportedly as they were out drinking in the city now notorious for the dozens of foreigners who have been seized in recent months.

Zimbabwe’s main opposition vowed on Monday to organise more rallies against President Robert Mugabe’s rule despite a brutal police crackdown on the weekend. Scores were hurt and about 130 arrested on Sunday as riot police used tear gas and water cannons to break up a planned rally in Harare by chief opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai.
