Indonesia plans to disinfect flooded capital

People camped out in shelters or with relatives in Indonesia’s flood-hit capital began returning to homes on Saturday to clear away mud and debris, as authorities took advantage of receding waters to remove piles of wet garbage from the streets. Much of the city remains inundated following the worst floods in memory.

G7 meeting ‘ignoring needs of Africa’

An NGO on Friday accused finance ministers of the world’s leading industrial nations of ignoring the needs of Africa. The Group of Seven (G7) meeting taking place in Essen is ”missing a critical opportunity to help Africa break the back of extreme poverty and Aids”, the advocacy group Data said.

Bird flu resurfaces in northern Nigerian state

Bird flu has reappeared, after an eight-month lull, on poultry farms in a fourth state in northern Nigeria, officials said on Friday. ”In the past one week we culled 5 000 chickens following laboratory confirmation of the existence of the avian flu virus in samples of dead chickens,” said a state agriculture commissioner.

No evidence Anna Nicole Smith died of drugs

Doctors investigating the sudden death of Anna Nicole Smith said on Friday night that prescription drugs had been found in the model’s hotel room, but that no pills had been present in her stomach. Smith (39) died after collapsing in a Florida hotel room on Thursday. She was a former Playboy playmate of the year.
