Anti-crime-campaign brouhaha rumbles on

Mixed reaction continued to be expressed on Tuesday following weekend reports that First National Bank had shelved its anti-crime campaign that invited people to write to President Thabo Mbeki. Most Gauteng newspapers condemned the withdrawal the bank’s multimillion-rand campaign as a cowardly act.

Stalin’s ghost haunts Black Sea hotel

Tucked behind century old pines, the austere and sombre green building looks ghostly. A plaque at the entrance reads simply: "Stalin’s Villa." Time was when an uninvited visitor would have been terrified to come even close to the so-called Red Tsar’s summer residence in southern Russia’s Black Sea resort of Sochi. But today, capitalism has triumphed and, for a price, anyone is welcome.

Apple, Beatles settle trademark dispute

Apple and The Beatles on Monday settled their long-running trademark dispute over the use of "Apple" as a name and logo, raising hopes that songs by the Fab Four might soon be available as legal downloads. The Beatles lay claim to the Apple trademark through their multimedia company Apple Corps.

Space community shocked by love-struck astronaut

Astronaut Lisa Nowak’s attack on a rival for the affections of a fellow astronaut sent shockwaves on Tuesday through a tightly-knit Nasa community accustomed to its crewmembers showing the ”right stuff,” and not getting involved in love triangles. Johnson Space Centre director Michael Coats said in a statement the space agency was ”deeply saddened by this tragic event”.

Committee clears World Cup finance hurdle

The local organising committee has cleared its first hurdle in the race to have amenities in place for the Soccer World Cup by balancing a stadium budget R3,4-billion over the original R8,7-billion. This was done by trimming costs and obtaining additional finance from the municipalities where games would be played.

Troubled African game marks 50th anniversary

African soccer exports myriad talent around the world but the success of the continent’s teams on the global stage has not lived up to the predictions. Both PelĂ© and former England manager Walter Winterbottom are credited with forecasting that the continent would produce a World Cup winner by the end of last century.
