Two pigs wearing tailor-made wedding outfits "tied the knot" on Monday in a ceremony attracting hundreds of well-wishers at a small town in north-eastern Taiwan. The "bridegroom," an 18kg boar, and his "bride," an 11kg pig, were wed in a lavish ceremony presided over by local magistrate Lu Kuo-hwa.

First National Bank (FNB) will go ahead with its anti-crime campaign but at a later date, the South African Broadcasting Corporation reported on Monday. The bank withdrew its multimillion-rand initiative meant to pressurise President Thabo Mbeki into making crime prevention his first priority, apparently after meeting with security cluster leaders on Friday.

Indonesia’s capital faced more misery on Monday from floods that officials estimate have killed at least 20 people and displaced 340 000, as swollen rivers and canals spilled muddy water onto the city streets. The flooding in parts of the tropical city of nine million people has been up to four metres deep, causing blackouts, cutting telephone lines and blocking key roads.

Britain gassed tens of thousands of turkeys and extended restrictions on the movement of poultry to try to prevent the spread of deadly bird flu from a farm in eastern Britain. United Nations officials said they were not surprised by the outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza and said they have been expecting the virus to spread during the colder winter months.
