H5N1 bird flu confirmed in Britain

The European Commission on Saturday confirmed that the H5N1 strain of bird flu was found on a poultry farm in eastern England. The Commission was informed by British authorities of the suspected outbreak of avian influenza in Suffolk on Friday, the European Union executive said in a statement.

Race brouhaha over World Cup brochure

An allegedly racist caption in a brochure for the 2007 Cricket World Cup has opened up longstanding racial tensions between Guyana’s East Indians and its African-descendant population. The caption says ”with Guyana’s distinct Indian heritage you are sure to experience the fusion of West Indian and East-Indian culture”.

Els on tail of Dubai leader Fisher

Three-times champion Ernie Els was breathing down the neck of surprise leader Ross Fisher of Britain when the Dubai Desert Classic second round was completed on Saturday morning. The 37-year-old South African, two strokes adrift when fading light forced him off the course with four holes to play on Friday, finished with three pars and a birdie four at the last to record a seven-under 65.

Hu tells Sudan it must solve Darfur

Chinese President Hu Jintao told Sudan’s President Omar Hassan al-Bashir on Friday that Khartoum had to resolve the four-year-old conflict in Darfur. Hu urged al-Bashir in a face-to-face meeting to boost the United Nations’s ”constructive role in realising peace in Darfur” along with the African Union.

100 000 displaced by floods in Jakarta

About 100 000 people camped out at roadsides and in emergency shelters as swathes of the Indonesian capital remained inundated on Saturday following a third night of torrential downpours with more rain forecast. Officials said they were struggling to cope with the scale of the disaster while hundreds of troops were deployed to help the worst-hit areas of Jakarta.

The Lions fall at first hurdle
