The Lions fall at first hurdle

The Waratahs’ who have excelled in recent years, in the Super 12, now Super 14 competition, went on to beat the Lions 25-16 at Ellis Park on Friday night.

The Waratahs’s Daniel Halangahu went over for a try in the 24th minute, which was converted by Peter Hewat, who also added a penalty.

Then came a try by Rocky Elsom on the stroke of half-time, which was followed by a try from the Lions Louis Ludik. The Waratahs then went into the break with a commanding 15-6 half-time lead.

The Waratahs greater experience showed through in the second-half with Adam Freier scoring the only try.

Scorers: Lions (6) 16: Try by Louis Ludik (41 minutes). Louis Strydom kicked three penalties and a conversion. Waratahs (15) 25. Tries by Daniel Halangahu (24 minutes), Rocky Elsom (40 minutes) and Adam Freier (67 minutes). Peter Hewat kicked two conversions and two penalties. – Sapa
