Guinea snubs delegation from African body

Guinea refused entry to a delegation of mediators from West African regional body Ecowas on Friday, saying it had resolved the dispute which sparked a general strike last month. An Ecowas delegation had been scheduled to travel to the Guinean capital Conakry on Friday to encourage dialogue after an 18-day strike in which more than 90 people were killed.

Bloody week in the DRC

Nearly 100 people died and 30 others were wounded this week in clashes in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) that erupted when demonstrators protesting alleged electoral fraud rampaged through several towns and security forces tried to restore order, rights groups and humanitarian organisations said.

US urges ‘global discussion’ on UN warming report

The Bush administration played down the United States contribution to world climate change on Friday and called for a ”global discussion” after a United Nations report blamed humans for much of the warming over the past 50 years. ”We are a small contributor when you look at the rest of the world,” US Energy Secretary Sam Bodman said of greenhouse gas emissions.

Guilty: Spy who tried to sell Coke’s secrets

A trusted former secretary at Coca-Cola faces up to 10 years behind bars for plotting to cash in on one of the business world’s fiercest rivalries by stealing vials of new cola products and offering them to arch competitor, Pepsi, for $1,5-million. Coke has traditionally made much of the fact that the recipe to its signature product is kept in a bank vault accessible to only a handful of people.

SA canter to 10 wicket victory

South Africa barely raised a sweat in defeating Pakistan by 10 wickets in front of a capacity crowd of 30 000 in their Standard Bank Pro20 match at the Wanderers on Friday night.A record first wicket partnership of 132 between Graeme Smith and Loots Bosman took South Africa to an easy victory, with eight overs and three balls in hand.

Zim govt: Newspaper bullet story a ‘cheap sideshow’

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe’s spokesperson on Friday accused the editor of an independent newspaper of staging a ”cheap sideshow” by claiming he was sent an envelope containing a bullet. George Charamba accused, Bill Saidi — acting editor of the Standard — of trying to distract the public from his paper’s ”monumental editorial failure”.

Police deny plans to reduce white officers

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has denied that it intends reducing the number of white police officers. It was responding to reports of police plans to change the white-to-black ratio from one-to-five to one-to-10 in the next three years. ”Police top management outright rejects [the] rumours,” said Director Sally de Beer.
